THE CHAMELEONS History
The Chameleons were formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in 1981 by vocalist and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarists Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever. Emerging during the golden era of British post-punk, the band developed a distinctive sound built around shimmering guitars, atmospheric production and emotionally charged songwriting. Their records developed a following beyond their original release period.
The group’s debut single, In Shreds, introduced audiences to their expansive guitar sound and introspective lyrics, quickly earning praise from the UK independent music press. Their reputation grew through relentless touring and critically acclaimed live performances, helping them establish a devoted following across Britain and Europe.
Script of the Bridge, released in 1983, established The Chameleons’ layered guitar sound. Second Skin, Up the Down Escalator, Don’t Fall and Less Than Human combine interlocking guitar lines with Mark Burgess’s bass and vocals.
Following the success of their debut, the band released What Does Anything Mean? Basically! in 1985 and Strange Times in 1986. These albums expanded the arrangements while retaining the group’s atmospheric guitar sound.
The band’s first period ended in 1987, following the death of manager Tony Fletcher. The split interrupted the recording partnership that had produced their three 1980s studio albums.
Despite their relatively short original career, The Chameleons’ influence continued to grow. Bands including Interpol, Editors, The National, White Lies and many others have cited them as a major inspiration, particularly for their atmospheric guitar work and emotionally driven songwriting.
The Chameleons returned for later reunions and performances. In 2025, Arctic Moon brought a new studio album featuring original members Mark Burgess and Reg Smithies alongside a later line-up. Dates and personnel help distinguish these recordings from the original group’s work.
Mark Burgess has remained the central figure throughout the band’s history, continuing to perform The Chameleons’ music while preserving the distinctive sound that made the group so influential.
