Philip David Charles Collins was born on 30 January 1951 in Chiswick, London. As both the drummer and later lead vocalist of Genesis, alongside a hugely successful solo career, Collins became one of the prominent artists of the 1980s. His voice and drumming connect those group recordings with his solo work.
Collins joined Genesis in 1970 as the band’s drummer, replacing John Mayhew. During the early years he worked alongside Peter Gabriel, contributing to a series of acclaimed progressive rock albums including Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Although initially known only as the drummer, Collins occasionally provided backing vocals and demonstrated his remarkable versatility as a musician.
After Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, Collins took on lead vocals while continuing to play drums in the studio. A Trick of the Tail introduced that line-up on record, followed by later albums including Duke, Invisible Touch and We Can’t Dance.
Alongside Genesis, Collins launched a solo career with the release of Face Value in 1981. The album became an international success, driven by the unforgettable single In the Air Tonight. Featuring one of the most famous drum fills in music history, the song remains his signature recording and continues to captivate new generations of listeners.
Collins’s solo singles range from the restrained opening and dramatic drums of In the Air Tonight to the pop arrangements of Sussudio and One More Night. Against All Odds, Another Day in Paradise and I Wish It Would Rain Down show other aspects of his vocal and songwriting style.
In the Air Tonight begins with a sparse arrangement and builds towards its distinctive drum entrance. The contrast between those sections is central to the recording and to the atmosphere of Face Value.
Collins became one of the biggest stars of the 1980s, earning multiple Grammy Awards, Brit Awards and an Academy Award nomination. His duet Easy Lover with Philip Bailey became an international hit, while Another Day in Paradise addressed homelessness and demonstrated his willingness to tackle social issues through popular music.
Health problems affected Collins’s ability to play drums in later years. On Genesis’s final tour in 2021 and 2022, Nic Collins played drums while Phil performed the lead vocals.
Beyond his own recordings, Collins enjoyed a successful career as a producer and songwriter, working with artists including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Howard Jones and Frida of ABBA. His contribution to Disney’s Tarzan, including You’ll Be in My Heart, earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Phil Collins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. His influence continues to be felt across pop, rock and contemporary music.
