CROWDED HOUSE History
Crowded House formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985 with Neil Finn, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. Finn and Hester had played in Split Enz; the new group developed a melodic pop-rock sound built around Finn’s songs and the interaction of the three musicians.
Neil Finn had already achieved international recognition with Split Enz before forming Crowded House, but the new band offered him greater creative freedom as a songwriter. Their self-titled debut album, Crowded House, released in 1986, introduced audiences to Finn’s exceptional songwriting and produced the worldwide hit Don’t Dream It’s Over.
Don’t Dream It’s Over became an international breakthrough for Crowded House, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its measured arrangement and vocal melody made it a centrepiece of the 1986 debut album.
The studio albums Temple of Low Men, Woodface and Together Alone expanded the group’s sound. Recurring Dream later gathered hits including songs from that first period. Better Be Home Soon, Weather with You, Fall at Your Feet and Four Seasons in One Day show the range of moods within the catalogue.
Crowded House announced their farewell in 1996. The Farewell to the World concert at the Sydney Opera House marked the end of the group’s first period and became a document of their live repertoire.
After Paul Hester’s death in 2005, a new chapter developed from Neil Finn’s recording work with Nick Seymour. Time on Earth was released as a Crowded House album in 2007, followed by further recording and touring.
