ANTHRAX History

ANTHRAX History
Anthrax formed in New York City in 1981 and became one of the most influential bands in the development of thrash metal. Alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, Anthrax formed part of the legendary “Big Four” of thrash, helping transform heavy metal during the 1980s with faster tempos, aggressive riffs and high-energy performances.

Founded by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker, Anthrax quickly developed a reputation for combining technical musicianship with a distinctive sense of humour and an accessible approach that set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Early albums such as Fistful of Metal and Spreading the Disease established the foundations of their sound and introduced the band to a growing international audience.

Their breakthrough arrived with albums including Among the Living, State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time. These releases featured many of the songs that remain fan favourites today, including Caught in a Mosh, Indians, I Am the Law and Antisocial. Anthrax successfully balanced aggression and melody, creating music that appealed to both hardcore metal fans and mainstream rock audiences.

The band also became known for pushing boundaries beyond traditional metal. Their groundbreaking collaboration with Public Enemy on Bring the Noise helped bridge the gap between rock and hip-hop, influencing countless artists and demonstrating the band’s willingness to experiment with new ideas.

Throughout lineup changes, evolving musical trends and changing eras within heavy music, Anthrax have remained a respected force in metal. Their live performances continue to attract devoted audiences around the world, while classic albums remain essential listening for fans of thrash and heavy metal.

Today Anthrax are recognised as one of the most important metal bands of their generation. Their vinyl releases remain highly collectible, particularly limited edition pressings, coloured vinyl editions and live recordings that capture the energy and intensity that made them legends of the thrash metal movement.
