The Smiths played a landmark benefit concert at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool on 8 February 1986, dubbed 'From Manchester With Love', which supported the Liverpool City Council. The show was a Manchester-centric bill featuring headliners The Smiths, The Fall, and New Order, with John Cooper Clarke also appearing.

Their 45-minute set heavily featured upcoming material from The Queen Is Dead album (released later on in 1986) including debuts of Vicar in a Tutu and Cemetery Gates, alongside a mashup of Rusholme Ruffians and Elvis Presley's (Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame.
