David Bowie – Rome 1996 (12-Inch Double Album)

Presented in a gatefold sleeve.

David Bowie’s complete concert broadcast from the Stadio Olimpico, in Rome, on 9 July 1996.

David Bowie took to the stage at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy, on 9 July 1996, as part of his Outside Summer Festivals Tour. Backed by a tight five-piece band featuring guitarist Reeves Gabrels, bassist and vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey, keyboardist Mike Garson and drummer Zachary Alford, Bowie delivered a distinctive set blending experimental alternative rock with highlights from his remarkable back catalogue. The performance opened with Look Back in Anger before moving through darker, atmospheric material from 1. Outside (1995), including The Hearts Filthy Lesson, Outside and The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty).

The Rome concert has since become particularly memorable among Bowie fans for an unusual reason: the performance reportedly lasted only around an hour, making it one of the shortest shows of his career. Despite the abbreviated set, the audience heard powerful renditions of Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), The Man Who Sold the World, Hallo Spaceboy and Telling Lies, before Bowie closed with Under Pressure and the anthemic Heroes. The reasons behind the early finish remain uncertain, everybody thought that he would return for the encores, but it was not the case, with reports suggesting frustrations over delays and restrictions on photographers.
